ΣΛΠ

Slap. Sigma-Lambda-Pi. Not a fraternity/sorority/"greek" organization; perhaps we should call it the un-fraternity. And if you're in, you probably know more Greek (or at least Greek letters) than the average frat boy / sorority sister.

It actually stands for "Sum of Lambda and Pi", where lambda refers, naturally, to the lambda-calculus, and pi to the pi-calculus, the two important theoretical foundations underpinning most interesting programming languages. The name evokes, tongue-in-cheek, language wars, editor wars, and all those stuff geeks passionately engage in because, well, er..., they are not actually *that* important (isn't it better than engaging in holy war over something that is actually serious?)

But "slap" is not actually about work and academia. Au contraire; it is for those engaged in such work to unwind. The unifying topic is ecletic geekiness: random board games, mathematically-interesting card games (hello, poker!), discussing Ignoble prize submissions....
